Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
